South Carolina Brief Info

Officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Rhode Island is a state in the United States ' New England region. It is the smallest state by population in the United States, the least populous seventh, and the densest populated second. Rhode Island is bordered to the west by Connecticut, to the north and east by Massachusetts, and to the south by Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound by the Atlantic Ocean. It also shares with New York a small maritime border. Providence is the capital of the state and Rhode Island's most populous city.

Rhode Island covers an area of 1,214 square miles (3,144 km2) within the New England zone, bordering Massachusetts on the north and east, Connecticut on the west, Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean on the south. This shares a short maritime border between Block Island and Long Island with the State of New York. The average state elevation is 200 feet (61 m). It is only 37 miles (60 km) wide and 77 km (48 miles) long, but the state has 384 miles (618 km) of coastal shoreline on Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Rhode Island is nicknamed the State of the Ocean and has several beaches on the sea coast. It is mostly flat with no real mountains, and Jerimoth Hill, 812 feet (247 m) above sea level, is the highest natural point of the kingdom. The system has two distinct regions of existence. Eastern Rhode Island is home to the Narragansett Bay lowlands, while Western Rhode Island is part of the upland of New England. The woods of Rhode Island are part of the ecoregion of the Northeastern coastal forests.

Most of Rhode Island, with warm summers and cold winters, has a humid continental climate. The state's southern coastal parts are the broad transition area for subtropical climates, with hot summers and cool winters mixed with rain and snow. Block Island's atmosphere is oceanic. Rhode Island's highest recorded temperature was 104 F (40 C), recorded in Providence on August 2, 1975. On February 5, 1996 in Greene, the lowest recorded temperature was ?23 F (?31 C) in Rhode Island. The average monthly temperatures range from 83 F (28 C) to 20 F (?7 C).

The country's first fully automated post office is in Providence. Newport's seaside city has many historic mansions, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Belcourt Castle. There is also the Touro Synagogue, dedicated on December 2, 1763, believed by local people to be the first synagogue in the United States (see below for information on the claim made by New York City) and still operating. The synagogue highlights Roger Williams ' religious freedoms as well as stunning architecture in a combination of classic colonial and sephardic style. The Newport Casino is a National Historic Landmark building complex that currently houses the International Tennis Hall of Fame and has an active tennis club in the grass courts.
