Hawaii is a United States of America territory. It is the only state in the Pacific Ocean and the only state entirely composed of islands.
The territory covers almost the entire archipelago of Hawaii, 137 islands spread over 2,400 km (1,500 miles). The volcanic archipelago is part of Oceania's Polynesian subregion physiographically and ethnologically. The eight major islands are clustered at the southeastern end of the archipelago, in order from northwest to southeast: Niiihau, Kauai, O modific, Molokai, L?nai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. The last is the largest island in the group; to avoid confusion with the state or archipelago, it is often called the "Big Island" or "Hawai?i Island".
The rich natural scenery of Hawaii, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches, ocean landscapes and active volcanoes make Hawaii a popular destination for visitors, surfers, biologists and volcanologists. Due to its central location in the Pacific and labor migration of the 19th century, Hawaii culture, in addition to its indigenous Hawaiian culture, is strongly influenced by North American and East Asian cultures.
Tourism is an important part of the economy of Hawaii. According to state government statistics, there were more than 6.4 million tourists to the Hawaiian Islands in 2003, with spending of more than $10 billion. Tourist travel is popular all year round due to the mild weather. The main holidays, especially in the winter months, are the most popular times for outsiders to visit. Significant numbers of Japanese tourists are still visiting the islands, but Chinese and Koreans have now exceeded them due to the collapse of the price of the Yen and the weak economy of Japan. The Japanese average stays for only 5 days, while other Asians spend more than 9.5 days and 25 times more.
There are several cultural events in Hawaii. The International Hula Competition is the annual Merrie Monarch Festival. The Hawaii International Film Festival is the first Pacific rim cinema film festival. Honolulu hosts the Rainbow Film Festival, the long-running film festival of the state.Read: Hawaii Wikipedia Page
