Florida is the United States ' southernmost contiguous territory. The state is bordered by Mexico's Gulf to the west, Alabama to the northwest, Georgia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Florida's Straits to the south. Florida is the U.S.'s 22nd largest (65,755 sq mi or 170,300 km2), 3rd largest (21,312,211 inhabitants), and 8th densely populated (384.3/sq mi or 148.4/km2). Jacksonville is the state's most populated municipality and the contiguous United States ' largest city by population. The metropolitan area of Miami is the most populated urban area in Florida. Tallahassee is the capital of the state.

The $1.0 trillion economy in Florida is the fourth largest economy in the U.S. If it were a nation, as of 2018, Florida would be the world's 16th largest economy, and the 58th most populous. The per capita personal income of Florida in 2017 was $47,684, ranking the nation's 26th. In September 2018, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent and listed in the United States as the 18th. Florida exports almost $55 billion of state-made goods, the 8th highest among all countries. With a GDP of $345 billion as of 2017, the Miami Metropolitan Area is by far the largest urban economy in Florida and the 12th largest in the U.S. This is more than twice the number of the next metro area, the $145 billion GDP Tampa Bay Area. Florida is home to 51 billionaires from around the world, most of whom live in South Florida.

Florida today is distinguished by its large Cuban expatriate community and high population growth, as well as its increasing environmental issues. The economy of the state relies primarily on tourism, farming, and transportation, which developed in the late 19th century. Florida is also known for having nice parks, orange plants, winter vegetables, the Kennedy Space Center, and as a popular retirement destination. Amusement parks make up a significant portion of tourism, especially in the Greater Orlando region. With more than 50 million annual visitors, the Walt Disney World Resort is the most visited resort in the world, consisting of four theme parks, 27 theme destination hotels, 9 non-Disney hotels, two water parks, four golf courses and other recreational facilities. The Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa are other major theme parks in the city. Today, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million, Walt Disney World is the most visited holiday resort in the world.
