Alabama is a state in the United States ' southeastern region. It is bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Georgia, on the south by Florida and the Mexican Ocean, and on the west by Mississippi. Alabama is the area's 30th largest and the U.S.'s 24th most populous. Alabama is one of most states with a total of 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of inland waterways.

Alabama is the thirtieth largest state in the United States with a total area of 52,419 square miles (135,760 km2): 3.2% of the territory is water, making Alabama the 23rd largest in surface water, thus making it the second largest inland waterway system in the U.S. Approximately three-fifths of the land area is a gentle plain with a general decline to the Mississippi River and the Mexico Gulf. The region of North Alabama is mostly mountainous, with the Tennessee River cutting through a large valley, creating numerous creeks, streams, rivers, mountains, and lakes.

Tourism in the state is a powerful industry. Alabama ranked 14th in most famous states to visit in 2014, according to Business Insider. The government visited a record 26 million visitors in 2018. More than 100,000 of these come from other countries, including Canada, the Us, Germany, and Japan. 22.3 million passengers spent $8.3 billion in 2006, providing the state with an additional 162,000 jobs.

The state is host to numerous attractions, natural features, parks and activities that draw tourists from all over the world, including the annual Hangout Music Festival on Gulf Shores ' public beaches; the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, one of the world's ten largest Shakespeare festivals; the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a series of championship caliber golf courses scattered throughout the world.
